News update:

SGI Hants & IOW members - Gandhi, King, Ikdea Exhibition - April  23rd - May 5th  2012

This exhibition is about the life and work of three extraordinary men, from ordinary backgrounds, whose lives embrace three centuries. Although from different religious and cultural traditions, they share the belief that violence and war ultimately solve nothing, and that through the process of inner transformation an individual has the power to change society, the environment and the planet itself.
The architect of Indian independence, Mohandas Gandhi’s relentless campaign of passive resistance succeeded in liberating 300 million Indians from eighty-nine years of British imperial rule.

Following in the footsteps of Gandhi, Baptist minister Martin Luther King Jr. eschewed violence in any form, and spearheaded a momentous civil rights movement aimed at achieving social and political equality for African-Americans.  An ardent admirer of both Gandhi and King, Daisaku Ikeda, the Japanese leader of Soka Gakkai International, a world-wide Buddhist organisation, has dedicated his life to working for peace and the promotion of human rights.

The exhibition, which is suitable for the whole family, was inspired by the founding of the Gandhi, King, Ikeda Community Builder’s Prize in 2001, by the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel, and the Gandhi Centre for Reconciliation, Morehouse College, Atlanta, Georgia USA. According to Dr Walter Massey, the president of Morehouse College, where Martin Luther King Jr. had studied,  “The prize symbolizes the tradition these giants of humanity share.  It is hoped it will inspire and empower every person to take responsibility for the improvement of the human condition.”

SGI Members celebrate 50 years of SGI in EuropeSGI Hampshire

Members of SGI Hampshire and Isle of Wight met to share
experiences from some of our pioneer members and five
European youth division members who visited the UK.

We are very fortunate in this HQ as we have several members who have been practicing for more than 36 years and Southampton was one of the first districts outside of London in the early days. It was truly inspiring to hear their experiences from those early days.
